We are committed to: a two-party system, debate to establish public policy, and providing voters with a choice for town leadership.

MarthaMay

Martha May will be sorely missed. She epitomized the generous spirit of  public service.  For Democrats in Chatham, it is difficult to express how deeply we feel this loss. For decades Martha was a leader, a champion, a volunteer, and a dear friend.  She leaves a wonderful legacy.

Martha Jane May

Volunteer and Democratic chair in Chatham Borough, 72 Martha Jane (Billhardt) May of Chatham Borough died at her home with her family by Her side on Feb. 9, 2009 at the age of 72.

A borough resident for the past 37 years, she was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was raised in Ridgewood, NJ. On Jan. 31 of this year, she and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Martha was a wonderful neighbor and came to the aid of anyone who was in need. She was a dedicated volunteer to these and other endeavors such as: League of Women Voters, Chatham Borough Farmers Market, Chatham Borough CERT, and was an original member of the Recycling Committee of the Chathams. While raising her children she volunteered with heir activities especially the Madison Area YMCA and Minisink Swim and Diving Teams. Martha received the 2008 Healthy Bones award for her dedicated service as lead coordinator for osteoporosis education programs and in 2005 the Jeanette Balber Award for her service to the Democratic Party in Morris County . Martha was also elected chair of the  Democratic Party in Chatham Borough for a number of terms.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or Atlantic Hospice.

DEMOCRATS ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRADUATING SENIORS

Democrats in Chatham Township and Chatham Borough are working together to award their third annual scholarship for a graduating senior from the Chathams. This year, a $1000 scholarship will be awarded.

Each year, the Democratic Scholarship Committee of the Chathams (DSCC) provides a topic on which scholarship applicants are asked to write a 500 word essay.  This year’s applicants will be asked to write a letter to President Obama.  The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant with the best essay, as determined by the DSCC.

The 2008 DSCC scholarship went to Chatham High School graduate Anthony Frank Reel. To earn the $500 scholarship, Reel had to write an essay making recommendations for how to increase voter participation in elections. Reel is now attending the Miami University in Ohio.

In 2007, the Chatham Township Democrats granted a $500 scholarship to Paul Salierno, who is now attending Franklin and Marshall College. Salierno earned the scholarship by writing an essay on whether the electoral college process is obsolete.

The Democratic Scholarship Committee of the Chathams is currently taking applications for the 2009 scholarship award. Applications must be submitted by February 27, 2009.

To obtain a scholarship application, or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, please contact Pam Huelster at 973-714-7948.
