Hey true-blue writers and friends ~This is the last week to write postcards! We won't mail cards after 10/21 because too many might go to people who have already voted. We don’t have the budget for that. There will be other volunteer opportunities for us to think about for the remaining 2 weeks. More on that in another email. This week we have 500 addresses/cards for registered NY 19 voters who are not affiliated with any party, i.e. they registered as “No Party”. The lists are sorted by chronological age, which is useful. We will use blank cards so that we can add a bit more message, tailored to an undecided recipient. I will be at HQ every day this week. Bring a cuppa coffee and join me at the big table for our final write-a-thon. If you don’t have time to stay, or if I’m not there (stepped out to buy more rubber bands maybe), on the writing table there will be packets of 5 cards with addresses and a message to copy. Take what you think you can complete by the weekend to mail on 10/21. The message is longer than usual, so take fewer cards. Always quality over quantity. Please note: To vote on the 2024 Statewide Proposal 1, also called the Amendment to Protect Against Unequal Treatment you need to flip your ballot over to make your choice.
This proposal would protect against unequal treatment based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy. It also protects against unequal treatment based on reproductive healthcare and autonomy. A “YES” vote puts these protections in the New York State Constitution. #3 – Early Mail-in voting and Absentee Ballot votingAbsent from your county or, if a resident of New York City absent from the five boroughs, on Election Day. Unable to appear at the polls due to temporary or permanent illness or disability. Unable to appear because you are the primary care giver of one or more individuals who are ill or physically disabled. A resident or patient of a Veterans Health Administration Hospital. In jail or prison for any reason other than a felony conviction. This includes anyone who is awaiting grand jury action, awaiting trial, or serving a sentence for a misdemeanor.

Give some treats on Halloween!Contribute to the Chatham Dems annual candy drive, and help Village residents on Kinderhook Street to treat the many Halloween trick-or-treaters who visit them. Please bring unopened bags of individually wrapped candy to 100 Kinderhook Street in the village and leave them in the large tub on the porch. We will distribute it to Kinderhook Street families who appreciate your help with this annual event! For climate friendly treating, Beyond Plastics suggests you buy candy in plastic-free packages. There are some options that come wrapped in foil or small thin cardboard boxes. Candies like Dots, Milk Duds, and Junior Mints come in small cardboard boxes, Tootsie Rolls and other fruit chews and Dubble Bubble come wrapped in paper, and there are many small Halloween-themed chocolates that come wrapped in foil that, at least in theory, can be collected and recycled.
