Every year on Halloween the Chatham Dems donate candy to homes on Kinderhook Street, as they get a very large number of trick-or-treaters on Halloween night.

We are currently collecting candy to provide to those households.

Board mulls department requests for new staffing

As the Town Board continued to discuss the proposed 2026 Town budget on Thursday, October 9, they looked at requests from the Town Building Inspector for the addition of one part time clerk; and from the Town Highway Superintendent for the addition of two full time laborers. These written requests were not approved in the proposed budget, but were set aside at the last meeting for further discussion by the full board.  

In the interim, board members had determined that there is not sufficient funding in the proposed budget to allow for this requested staffing. This reality is shaped by the board’s intent to keep within the tax cap for property owners, and the necessity of maintaining some fund balances to ensure a readiness to respond to unexpected costs that arise next year.

In light of that conclusion, Town Board member John Wapner asked that the board make a determination of the “legitimacy” of the staffing requests, so that a lack of available funds for staffing might be examined more closely in the future. He said that if the board sees staffing requests as legitimate; he would recommend that the Board take up these matters early in 2026, to see how the budget might be reconfigured to validate and plan how best to address such requests. Board members Werwaiss and Eaton both supported this suggestion.
