A 500-word essay earned Chatham High School graduate Anthony Frank Reel a $500 scholarship from the Democratic Scholarship Committee of the Chathams. The scholarship was awarded at CHS’ graduation ceremony on June 20, 2008.
To earn the scholarship, Reel had to write an essay making recommendations for how to increase voter participation in elections. Among the recommendations in Reel’s essay were: making Election Day a national holiday or scheduling it for a Saturday; allowing voters to register as late as one to two days before the election; limiting campaign spending; and providing the ability to register and vote online.
Last year, the Chatham Township Democrats granted a $500 scholarship to Paul Salierno, who is now attending Franklin and Marshall College. Salierno earned the scholarship by writing an essay on whether the electoral college process is obsolete.
The Chatham Township Democrats have now joined forces with the Chatham Borough Democrats to create the Democratic Scholarship Committee of the Chathams. One of the goals of the Scholarship Committee is to fund an annual scholarship for a graduating senior from Chatham.
Already the Scholarship Committee is working on its plans to raise funds for the 2009 scholarship. On Sunday, August 24, a Pig Roast will be held from 4pm until 7pm at 4 Joanna Way in Chatham Township, and it will be open to the public.
